The story of no king like God starts with a strong and feared king who once ruled his people with an iron grip on an African village. The people were forced to submit to him, obey his orders, and wish him a long life. A certain man stood out from the others, though, since he refrained from being as outspoken in his praise. Instead, he greeted the King with a straightforward remark such as “There is no king like God.”
The man’s disobedience grew increasingly annoying to the king over time, and he continued to welcome him in this way. He devised a plan to remove the man since he was really upset that he dared to challenge the king. Giving the man two silver rings, the king said that they were meant for him to wear this way. But the king had rather bad intentions, even without the man’s awareness.
The man accepted the rings. He put the rings into a dried ram’s horn and then gave it to his wife to keep them safely. One whole week had passed, and the king called the man again into the palace. He then assigned him the job of going to a nearby village to assist in the construction of city walls.
The moment that the man was off on his travels, the king invited his wife to the palace. He caught her attention with loads of cowry shells for pledges as the silver rings which her husband had given her to safe keep. She could not resist the temptation and nodded she was going for the rings inside the ram’s horn.
Once the king got hold of the horn, he looked into it and saw that the rings were there. He then commanded one of his servants to cast the horn into a lake. The servant did so and then a big fish gobbled up the horn with the rings.
Later one day the man who set off on his journey came back home and met some friends who were out to go fishing. Feeling lonely he joined in their experience, in their journey. While fishing, he landed a huge fish and took it home.
On returning from work that evening he asked his wife about two silver rings that he had given to her. She said she was having difficulties finding them. And so it was when they were debating this sad state of affairs that the royal guards brought them word from the king.
During the same occasion, his son was washing the fish they had caught while his father went to the palace. When he is working on it he accidentally hits something very hard with the knife, which causes him to shout to his father. Seeing his son finally, the father found out that his son had found a horn inside the fish.
Out of curiosity he opened it and got a surprise of his life. Inside the fish were two silver rings that the king had given him and he never thought he see them again. He blessed this God with the words: “There is no king like God!” When he got to the palace and prostrated before the king, saying the usual ‘I have come’ this time round it was a great moment.
Of the gifts he showered the queen, the king asked to see the rings he had bought before. Before he could blow the whistle that would command his guards to cut off the man’s head, they stopped. The man presented the pocket-sized ram’s horn to the king without any stress. Giving it to the king without any regret he saw the king tearing it and taking out two silver rings from it.
Seeing this plot twist the king wondered how this man was able to regain what seemed lost. In that moment of realization, he proclaimed loudly for all to hear: “There is no other king like God.” His chief advisors chimed in their confirmation in surprise.
After this extraordinary meeting, due to the loyalty and wisdom of the man, the king decided to share his kingdom. He divided this village in two and gave half of it to this man. The king recognized that actual power does not rest with earthly leaders but with the will of God.
