 Interesting Facts About Porcupines

The porcupines are adorned with slightly over 30,000 quills. The quills, in addition to being sharp, contain barbs that will not easily come out once implanted in the skin of a predator. Unlike the popular belief, porcupines are not able to shoot their quills; they only lose them on touch or when they shake their bodies.

Porcupines, being herbivores, mostly consume leaves, barks, and fruits. They are good climbers, the New World species particularly tending to live in trees. The Old World porcupines, however, belong to rocky areas and can climb less effectively.

A herd of porcupines is rather prettily termed a prickle. These species are mainly solitary, though they may exist in small family groups. The gestation period of female porcupines takes about 7 months. They normally deliver one to four young, commonly referred to as porcupettes. They are born with soft quills but harden shortly after birth. When endangered, porcupines will display tactics, which include ostrich posturing, teeth rattling, impulsive smell, and regurgitation.

The porcupines are a vocal animal. They can communicate using various noises in the form of grunts and high-pitched calls, mainly in terms of the mating season or in situations of feeling threatened. Interestingly, it has also been discovered that the porcupine quills are natural antibiotics. This helps prevent infections when they accidentally pierce themselves.
