A beloved children’s bedtime story is the one about the ant and the grasshopper. This story starts with an ant and a grasshopper who live in a field by the meadows. During the summer season, the ant would work very hard to earn her living by gathering wheat grains from the field owned by the farmer.
While the ant was working hard, the grasshopper spent all his days roaming around. The ant would spend all his days working hard from morning to night gathering heavy grain and balancing it on her back. Then she would also place the whole grain in her larder and take it back to the field to gather another grain.
She would dash from the field to her storeroom and back again after gathering another grain. The ant often repeats the process the whole day. Meanwhile, the grasshopper in the meadows wouldn’t do any work and he would only spend his days dancing. The grasshopper also made some rude remarks at the ant for working so hard the whole day in gathering grains.
Additionally, the grasshopper would invite the ant to dance and sing. He told the ant to have fun and live in the present. The ant would just ignore his request and continue gathering grains. The grasshopper began to tease the ant because of this, usually laughing aloud. Along with making fun of the ant, the grasshopper would say that they have enough food for the summer.
When the ant heard this, she informed the grasshopper that she was gathering food for the winter season and she advised the grasshopper to also gather some food for the winter season. However, the grasshopper didn’t pay any attention to her words and he would just spend his whole time singing and dancing.
When the summer season faded, autumn came and when autumn left, then came winter. Everywhere was very cold due to the heavy snowfall and the sun wasn’t visible. The nights were long and black in the winter. The grasshopper was affected by this and he lost his interest in dancing and singing.
The grasshopper grew cold and hungry over time. He was hungry, but he was also without shelter. Then he wondered how he would be able to leave this situation. Then he remembered the hardworking ant and planned to visit her for both food and a warm place to stay.
The grasshopper left for the ant’s house and he knocked on the door. The grasshopper was there when the ant opened the door. In return for food and a warm place to stay, he would sing for her. After hearing this, the ant told the grasshopper that she had worked hard during the summer to gather enough food for the winter.
She also mentioned that while doing this the grasshopper would make fun of her. She then advised the grasshopper to move on to find food and shelter elsewhere. After hearing the reply of the ant, then the realization hit the grasshopper. He remembered when the ant would advise him to gather food for the winter but he didn’t listen to her.
The grasshopper regretted that he didn’t save enough food for the winter. Instead of doing this, he was busy playing around and wasting his time during the summer.
Moral Lesson of The Story
The tale of the ant and a grasshopper is a classic tale. This story emphasizes that one must make the best of the present situation. Instead of struggling in the present situation so that he could enjoy it later, he chose to do the opposite.
The moral lesson of this story is that we should make plans for the future. It is advisable to start working hard in the present so that you can reap the fruits of your labor tomorrow. The grasshopper could have done this, instead, he chose to lazy around and have fun and he later regretted his actions.
