The Bird With Two Heads

The story of the bird with two heads is a famous Panchatantra tale that starts with a bird.  This magnificent bird was known by the name Bhraunda. The bird loved on the banks of a lake. This bird was quite different from other birds because, unlike other birds, this bird had two heads.

The Bird With Two Heads

The two heads shared one body and this was strange. One day, while the bird was wandering, it came across a red-golden fruit. This fruit looked delicious and the bird wanted to eat it. Then one of the bird’s heads mumbled that the fruit looked delicious. He talked about how he was happy to have found the fruit.

The bird’s head continued to talk about how he was lucky to have found the fruit because the heavens have sent it to him. The bird then started eating the fruits with pleasure. While he was eating the fruit the bird continued praising how the fruit was the tastiest fruit he had ever had.

Meanwhile, the other birds head asked to eat part of the fruit. He said that since the fruit received lots of praise for how delicious it was, he too wanted to have a taste of the fruit. The first head didn’t want to share the fruit with the second head and so he laughed at him.

The first head explained how both of them shared the same stomach. He said that whoever eats the fruit among them, same fruit would still be in the same stomach. He said that it doesn’t make any difference who eats the fruit.

The first head also said that since he was the one who found the delicious fruits, so he must be the one to eat the fruit. This hurt the second head and he thought of how selfish the first head was. The second head then remained quiet with disappointment on listening to the statement of the first head.

After a few days, the bird was wandering and they came across some fruits. However, this time, the second head was the one who found the fruits first. The fruits were from a nearby poisonous tree. The second head then told the first head that since he was a deceitful person and he didn’t share his delicious fruit with him, so he was going to have all the delicious fruits to himself.

The second head planned to eat all the fruit to himself as revenge. The first head knew that the fruits from the tree were poisonous. So he pleaded with the second head not to eat from the tree. The first head explained that they both share the same stomach and so if he ate the poisonous fruits both of them would suffer. He warned the second head not to eat from the tree but he didn’t listen.

The second head was furious at the first head and he mocked him. He then told the first head to shut up and since he was the one to find the fruit, he would be the one to eat it. He said that he had the right to eat the fruit all by himself since he was the one who found the fruit in the first place.

Knowing their fate, the first head started crying and the second head continued to eat the poisonous fruit. He didn’t let the warning from the first head bother him as he feasted to his heart’s content on the second head. He was blinded by this revenge and thus he ate the poisonous fruit without thinking twice.  After eating the fruit, it reached their stomach and they both were severely in pain. This concludes the story of the bird with two heads.
