The story of the fisherman and his wife is one of the Brother Grimm classic tale. This story starts with a fisherman who lived in a little shack near the sea. The man lived with his wife in his little shack. Every day the man would go fishing and he would fish all year long until one day he came across something.
While the man was fishing, he felt something on his fishing line. The man removed his fishing line from the water and he found was a large flounder at the end of his fishing line. The fisherman caught a rather unusual fish.
The fisherman caught an unusual fish. The fish claimed that it could talk and he was an enchanted prince who would not taste good. He then asked the fisherman to free him because he was of no use. Hearing the fish talk, the fisherman was surprised and after a while the fisherman freed the fish.
When the fisherman went back home, he told his wife about the fish he caught while fishing. When he got home, his wife asked him if he caught any fish today. The man told her that he was able to catch only one fish.
He told his wife that he only caught one fish who claimed to be an enchanted prince. So, he had to let the fish swim away. The wife then asked him if he made any wish and the man told his wife that there was nothing he could wish for.
The wife told her husband that he fish should have at least thanked him and if he was able to talk he could have least granted him certain wishes. She told her husband that he could have asked for nicer house to live.
Hearing this, the fisherman was not happy and so he went back to the sea to call the enchanted fish. The man went to the sea and he asked the fish to please come out and grant him his wish. The fisherman told the fish that since he was in contact with him, his wife had asked him to wish for a lovely villa and she no longer wish to stay in the dirty shack.
The fish heard his wish and granted his request. A nice villa was given to both the fisherman and his wife, and the man felt happy. However, his wife wanted more. So, the man went back to the sea to ask for more wishes.
The man went back and his wish was granted and so their lives improved for the better. The man and his wife were given a palace and soon after, their social status was raised, and they became royalty. Even with their amassed wealth, the wife remained unsatisfied.
The fisherman’s wife wanted to become a deity and so she asked her husband to ask for more wishes from the fish. However, each time the man went to the fish to ask for more wishes, the fish would act grumpy.
The man asked the fish to make his wife a pope and he agreed to that. When the man returned home, he saw his wife sitting on a throne with a crown on her head.
The man asked his wife if she was now a pope and she replied that yes, she was. The man told his wife that she could be happy being a pope and that she couldn’t go any higher than that. However, the woman was still not contempt with her status and she wished to go higher.
The woman was unable to sleep because of her wish. So, she waked her husband up and she told him to go to the fish to ask for more wishes. She told her husband that she wanted to be the universe and if she wasn’t she wouldn’t be able to rest until she became one.
The man went on his knees to beg his wife and told her that the enchanted fish wouldn’t grant her wish. He can only make her a pope or an emperor but certainly not a universe because this was beyond him.
The woman was angry at her husband and she yelled at him to go and meet the fish. In annoyance, the man left his house and he went to meet the fish. When he got to the sea, the fish asked him what he wanted. Then he told him that his wish wanted to be the universe.
The fish didn’t grant her the wish and he told her husband that he would find his wife in their old shack. The man went back to his old shack and he saw his wife.
