The tale of the golden touch is a Greek mythology. This story starts with a mighty king named Midas. The king had several fortunes to his name, and he ruled over the country of Phrygia. The king had all the wealth that other kings could only dream of.
However, despite his enormous wealth, King Midas was still unhappy. The king sought to acquire more treasures to augment his wealth. He wanted more, and he thought to himself that once he had the golden touch, he truly would be the happiest man in the world.
The king wanted the golden touch because whatever he laid his hands on would turn to gold. One particular day, as King Midas was busy counting all the gold he had, suddenly, a Greek god appeared to him.
The Greek god granted King Midas a wish for some of the good deeds he had done. Without much thought, King Midas made a wish that whatever he touched would turn to gold. After hearing the king’s wish, the Greek god granted him his wish, and he disappeared afterwards.
After a while, the King was sitting under an apple tree in his kingdom, then an apple fell on him. Seeing the apple, the king picked it up, and immediately, the apple turned into gold. This amazed the king, and he couldn’t believe what he had just seen.
Then the king noticed that whatever he touched would turn to gold, and soon he started touching random things that then turned to gold immediately. This made the king very excited, and he filled himself with joy. After a while, the King was hungry, and he went into his kitchen.
When the king entered the kitchen and touched his food, it turned to gold. This made the king sad because he was hungry. Meanwhile, the King had a beautiful daughter, Marigold. After witnessing the disappointment that her father faced in the kitchen, she went to meet her father and hugged him; however, much to the king’s horror, his daughter turned to gold.
The king was shocked because he had turned his beloved daughter into gold. This made the king heartbroken, and he was filled with only regrets and grief. He was sad that his daughter had turned into a gold statue.
The king cried, and he regretted ever wishing for the golden touch. And in no time, the king realized that his wish was greedy, and it was his fault that his daughter was in that state. The King then begged the Greek god to help him undo his wish.
Not long after, the Greek god appeared again before the king, and he took pity on the king’s condition. Then, the Greek god undid the king’s wish. He instructed the king to dip his hands in the palace pond and then sprinkle some of the water on the things that he wanted to change back to normal.
Immediately, the king followed the Greek god’s instructions. After dipping his hands into the water, he sprinkled the pond water on his beautiful daughter, and soon she was back to her normal state. The king was overjoyed that his daughter had returned to her regular state. He promised henceforth that he would never be greedy again.
Moral Lesson from The Golden Touch (King Midas)
King Midas’ tale delivers important life lessons regarding both greed and love and genuine happiness. King Midas pursued more wealth, which made him ignore important life priorities. The king, desiring to be touched by gold, displays how excessive greed produces hidden negative effects. His pursuit of happiness results in the loss of everything he cares about the most.
Through his experience, the king discovered that wealth does not bring happiness. Immense wealth became his doom because it proved better to have love instead of the abundance of metal.
The tale functions as an important lesson that shows the need for deliberate decision-making. King Midas made an impulsive decision that resulted in his descent into sadness as a lesson for people to scrutinize their yearnings before attempting them.
In conclusion, The Golden Touch shows the dangers of greed and the significance of cherishing what truly matters in life: our loved ones and meaningful connections.
