The tale of the little match girl begins on a cold and snowy night. It was almost dark, and time was running out. It was the evening time and this was the last evening of the year. In the snowy and cold atmosphere, there was a little girl. This little girl was poor and had no money to her name.
Barefooted, the little girl would sell match sticks while walking through the streets. When she left her home, she didn’t have any slippers on because the ones that she had were very big. After all, her mother owned them and they wouldn’t be able to protect her in the cold weather.
She had also lost the slippers that she had while she was walking through the streets. A carriage had hit her and her slippers were flung across the street. She couldn’t find one of the slippers and a boy ran off with the other pair of slippers. So, the little girl had to walk through the streets barefoot.
After walking barefoot, the little girl’s feet were blue and red due to the cold weather. The girl carried with her several match sticks and she held them in her hand hoping to sell some to earn some money. But nobody took the matchsticks out of her hand.
The young girl was starving and shivering from the cold. Snowflakes fell on the little girl and she hoped that she had a warm place to sleep and food to eat. She could see warm food from the windows of another house.
The little girl then sat down in the corner of a street and she drew her feet closer. As time passed the little girl was getting colder and colder. However, she couldn’t go home because she hadn’t sold any matchstick and hadn’t earned any money. Because of this, her father would often beat her.
Since there wasn’t any food at home, the little girl couldn’t go home. All they had was a roof to their head and nothing more. Her hands were almost frozen from the cold and she thought of lighting one match to keep herself warm.
Then she took one match and lit it to warm herself. A warm, bright flame similar to that of a candle was lit by the matchstick. She then held her hands close to it and she felt something strange. The warm light made the little girl feel as if she was sitting close to a fireplace at home.
This made her happy and she brought her feet closer to the light, but the flames went out. The fireplace which she had imagined also vanished out. The little girl then lit another match stick and this time she could see a room. In the room, there was a table that had a white tablecloth that was spread on it.
On the table, there was a roast goose stuffed with prunes and apples. The goose also had a fork and knives around it. This made the little girl very happy as she was starving. She stared at the massive walls as the light went out.
She then lit another match stick and this time she could see a well-decorated Christmas tree. This Christmas tree was better than any other Christmas tree she had seen from the window of a rich man’s home. There were lots of candles on the green branches and there were also ornaments on the Christmas tree. The little girl reached out to touch the Christmas tree, however the flames went out.
When the lights went out, she was the Christmas light and they were very bright. One of the lights fell and it formed a fire. The young girl believed that a person was dying. Her grandmother had told her that when someone died, a star would fall and the soul would go up to meet God.
The little girl then lit another match stick and it was bright again This is the first time she has seen her grandma. Knowing that she would vanish when the lights went out, she called out to her and asked her to take her. After lighting every match in the matchbox, the young girl noticed that her grandmother had become brighter in appearance.
The grandmother took her in her arms and the both of them flew into the sky and above the earth where there was no cold or hunger. But the little girl, leaning against the cold wall, had frozen to death. The little girl sat there frozen to death while holding the burnt matches.
