The Red Shoes

It is in a little village where the Red Shoes’ tale starts. Karen, a stunning girl, used to reside in this small village. Both Karen and her mother lived in a small hut. Karen was born into a poor household and they had little to nothing.

The Red Shoes

Karen didn’t have many clothes and shoes to wear. The only thing she wore were a pair of wooden shoes which her mother made for her. These wooden shoes were very hard and they hurt her little feet. Suddenly, Karen’s mom fell ill and she spent all she had to save her mother’s life.

One day while Karen was heading home, she saw a box, and inside the box was a pair of red shoes. Next to the roadside lay the shoe box. Karen loved these shoes and she thought of taking them home with her. After thinking, she took the shoes home.

When she got home, her mother saw the pair of red shoes and she wasn’t happy that Karen brought the shoes home. Her mother explained to her that it is not good to pick up things from the roadside or other strange places.

Her mother informed her that taking things from unexpected locations could be the belongings of someone else and that doing so would be considered theft. This response didn’t make Karen happy. She replied that the owner of the red shoes must have forgotten about it.

Karen’s mother tried to convince her that she should return the red shoes and put them back where she found them and also promised her that she would never wear those shoes. Karen was still fixated on the red shoes, though.

After a week, Karen’s mom passed away from illness and her funeral was to take place. Karen wore a red pair of shoes to her burial. This shocked everyone as Karen wore bright red shoes to her mother’s funeral.

Afterward, an old lady passed by and she saw Karen’s red shoes. She pulled Karen by the hand and asked her to take off the shoes, however, Karen didn’t do it. With force, the old lady made Karen remove the red shoes.

The old lady then took Karen home with her and treated her as her child. The old lady had no children of her own and so she treated Karen as her own and loved her dearly. Then the old lady bought shoes, toys, dresses, and food for her. However, this didn’t please Karen. She didn’t like the pair of shoes that the old lady got for her because the shoes were blue. Karen missed her old red shoes.

After a few years, Karen had grown up to be a beautiful young lady, but she was still as stubborn as ever. As she grew up, her clothes and shoes became tight for her. So, she and the kind old lady went to buy new clothes and shoes.

Karen noticed a stunning pair of red shoes as they arrived at the store. She wanted to get these shoes; however, the old lady wouldn’t buy them for her. Karen made the elderly woman get the red shoes since she insisted on having them. Karen purchased the red shoes and brought them home. The old lady also bought a black pair of shoes for Karen.

After shopping, they had no money left, so they had to walk back home. While walking home, the old lady was in pain. However, this didn’t bother Karen and she didn’t bother to take care of the old lady. She went home very happy.

The next day, Karen and the old lady had to attend a funeral. She then requested that Karen not attend the funeral in the red shoes. The old lady advised Karen not to wear the red shoes, but Karen insisted on wearing them.  Wearing it to the funeral, Karen hid the red shoe beneath her skirt.

At the funeral, people saw Karen wearing red shoes and they were angry. This made the old lady angry and she took Karen away from the church. A soldier who was watching all these came close to Karen and whispered to her red shoes.  The soldier told the shoes to be as stubborn as its owner and dance.

The soldier then complimented Karen that she might be a wonderful dancer. After listening to this, Karen started to dance. However, she couldn’t stop dancing. She danced all day and couldn’t eat or sleep.  Karen then missed the old lady and nobody could help her.

Karen was led across thrones and shrubs by the red shoes. She was dancing nonstop even though her feet pained. She managed to remove the shoes; however, they followed her everywhere. When she went home, the shoes would follow her. She then felt sorry for her stubbornness because she couldn’t get rid of the shoes.

Karen prayed to God to help her. Soon after the soldier saw her and told her that now that she isn’t stubborn then the shoes would also be like her. Then the shoes came off and this made Karen very happy.
