The story of the sleepless king begins in a kingdom far away. The king of this kingdom was famous for his humility and generosity. He lived with his wife, the queen, in the castle, and they were happy. The king’s castle was very beautiful, and its interiors were some of the finest in the kingdom.
The king’s mattresses were very soft and the sheets were white and they were very smooth. However, the king found it difficult to go to sleep. One fateful day the queen was thinking of buying a crown. She went ahead and ordered a new crown which was adorned with lots of gemstones.
The queen was occupied with shopping for the type of crown that she wanted. Several traders from different lands all came to the castle with their best jewels to sell to the queen. The queen was too busy getting a new crown while the king was in the castle.
After a while, the royals sat down to eat together. After shopping all day, the queen felt tired and barely stayed awake during dinner. When the queen was served her dessert, the ice cream melted and she fell asleep. When being so tired, the queen recognized it was time for her to go to bed.
She wished her husband a good night’s sleep and she went to her bed to sleep. While the queen was sleeping peacefully, the king was not able to sleep. He didn’t feel the least bit tired. After brushing his teeth, he went to bed.
After a few hours, the king couldn’t sleep. He kept tossing and turning and he wasn’t able to sleep at all. The king thought that by spending some alone time in the palace he would be able to get some sleep.
The king took the stairs and the person he met when he was downstairs was the treasurer who was busy counting coins, a stack of gold, and lots of precious jewels. Once he was aware of the king’s insomnia, he started thinking about what to do.
He then came up with an idea for the king. The treasurer gave a golden cloth to the king and he told him that this was the cloth that he used to polish the treasures. He told the king that each time he used the cloth to polish the treasures, he would fall asleep.
The royal treasurer told the king that he should try this and maybe he could get some sleep. The king decided to try what the treasurer told him and so he started to polish the royal jewels. He was able to polish all the treasures and the treasurer thanked him and went to sleep.
After he finished polishing the jewelry, the king was still wide awake and continued strolling in the palace. The king thought that maybe having a midnight snack would help him fall asleep. So, the king found his way to the kitchen and he saw the royal cook who was busy.
The cook was kneading the dough for tomorrow’s bread. After narrating his insomnia problem to the cook, the cook told him that he had an idea. He explained that kneading the dough made him sleepy and so the king tried this. However, he managed to knead the dough, but he was still wide awake.
The cook thanked the king for kneading the dough and he went to sleep. After a while, the king went outside to his garden to get some fresh air. While the king was taking a stroll in the garden, he saw the gardener who was trimming the grass.
The king narrated his whole ordeal to the gardener and the gardener said he had an idea. The king was told by him that he would grow weary and fall asleep if he cut the grass with a small scissors. Immediately, the king took the scissors and he started cutting the grass.
As he was trimming the grass, the queen in her room woke up and she saw the king outside. She called him and asked him what the matter was. The king explained everything to his wife and she came up with a solution. The queen made a warm milk and soon after the king fell asleep.
