The Story of Hansel and Gretel

The story of Hansel and Gretel is a German fairytale written by the Grimm Brothers. Two siblings who live in the woods with their father are the main focus of this tale. At a very young age, Hansel and Gretel lost their mother and their single father worked as a woodcutter while also looking after the twins.

The Story of Hansel and Gretel

Hensel and Gretel’s father, after being a single parent for a couple of years, decided to get remarried. The wife was from a wealthy family and she despised their financial situation and their small hut in the forest.

The new wife also hated Hensel and Gretel and devised a plan to get rid of them. She told her husband to abandon the twins in the woods and leave them there. However, the woodcutter doesn’t agree to this plan but the wife manages to convince him.

Hansel and Gretel heard their parents preparing to leave them in the woods as they were getting ready for bed. Then Hansel snuck out of the house to gather as many pebbles as he could. The next morning, Hansel and Gretel along with their stepmother and father started trekking to the woods. They were lied to by their father that they were going hiking.

As they were walking, Hansel started dropping the shiny pebbles to leave a trail.  While in the woods, their parent lit a fire and promised that they would be back to fetch them. Soon after their parents vanished into the woods. Both Hansel and Gretel were alone in the woods and they decided to follow the trail of peddle and head home.

Upon returning home, their father was delighted to see them. But this wasn’t the same for their stepmother. She yet again came up with another plan to abandon the twins in the woods. Hanse attempted to get additional pebbles, but the stepmother shut the door as they slept to prevent them from going outside to gather pebbles. But this doesn’t stop the clever Hansel. He planned to leave small pieces of bread as a trail.

As the family continued their hike, Hansel left behind a trail of breadcrumbs. He and his sister would be able to find their way home in this manner. In the woods again, they were abandoned. As they followed the breadcrumb trail home, they discovered that birds had consumed the crumbs, leaving them lost.

After wandering the woods for three days, they saw a bird and the bird chirped sounds. They decided to follow the bird and then they discovered a house made out of bread cake and candy. We made the walls of the house with bread, the roof with cake, and the windows with sugar. The kids began to eat at the house because they were hungry and tired.

After that, the house’s doors opened, and an old woman appeared She opened the house to Hansel and Gretel. The old woman fed them lots of delicious treats and also provided soft beds for them to sleep. Unbeknownst to the children, the elderly woman was a witch. An evil witch who was cannibalistic. She built the house to lure children inside so that she could feast on them.

The next morning when Hansel and Gretel woke up, they couldn’t find the old lady and they started looking for her. Then the old lady appeared in front of them and pulled Hansel. Then she dragged him into a cage. She notices how skinny Hansel is and decides to fatten him before she kills and cooks him for herself.

The old witch made Gretel cook and feed Hansel so that he could be fatter and fed only crab shells to Gretel. Hansel, being a smart boy, decided to play tricks on the old witch. Every morning the witch would check if Hansel had gained weight, however, Hansel wouldn’t eat anything his sister cooked but he buried it instead. The elderly witch then gave Gretel instructions to prepare extra food for Hansel.

As time went by, the witch grew impatient and decided to eat Hansel while being skinny. Gretel ensured the oven was hot enough after preparing it. When Gretel realized the old witch’s true intentions, she pretended not to get it.

After the elderly witch demonstrated to Gretel how to check, Gretel threw her inside the oven and shut the door. She knew where the witch was hiding the key and took it to free her brother. The oven’s flames spread throughout the entire house.

After freeing her brother from the cage, Hansel and Gretel discovered a box full of precious stones and pearls. They took these jewels and left. The kids came across a river and a sawn took them to the other side of the river. Recognizing the path, the children ran home.

Their father rejoiced as he saw them return home safely. Their father explained that their stepmother had returned to her parent’s house and he felt sorry for abandoning them in the woods.  They forgave their father and they brought out the treasures they took from the witch’s home. After that, all their problems had gone and they lived happily from that day on and this concludes the story of Hansel and Gretel.
