The Story of the Hungry Bird

By Adewunmi Adenekan April 30, 2025

The story of the hungry bird starts with a little sparrow who goes by the name Dip. This little bird lives with his parents and five siblings. Dip has five brothers, and he is the youngest of them. This little sparrow was a cute bird with a small fame.

The Story of the Hungry Bird

Dip feathers were very soft with red at his chest and gray all over his feathers. This color combination turns into a brownish shade on his wings. Dip and the rest of his family lived inside the Bell Tower of a church. Inside the tower, they all lived happily without any care in the world.

Dip’s mother would teach the little bird how to chirp along with the rhythm of the bells. The little sparrow and his family depended on their helper for food. There was a sweet old lady who gave food to the little sparrow and his family everyday.

The old lady lived right next to the Bell Tower, and each day she would put breadcrumbs on the window for the little sparrow and his family. This went on for years until one day the old lady passed away. The old lady was sick and she died of the illness.

Dip and his family were sad that the old lady had passed away as now they had nothing to eat. So, his father decided to go hunting. Dip’s father was filled with determination and he decided to hunt so that he could fend for his family.

After hunting for several hours, the older sparrow could only find three worms to feed his family. This wasn’t enough because there were about eight birds in the family. So, the older sparrows decided to feed only the little ones in the family.

This includes Dip and two of his brothers. They were the only ones in the family that were able to eat in the family and the rest stayed hungry. After a while, Dip’s father continued to hunt and still he wasn’t able to bring enough food for his family.

After seeing the father’s struggle, Dip and his mother decided to handle the matter by themselves. Dip and his mother started pecking on several peoples windows to beg for food. However, instead of getting food, the people on shooed them away.

This was very heartbreaking for the little sparrow and his mother. Then, one day, Dip and his mother went to the bakery to meet a baker. When they got there, the baker chased them away, and he threw ashes on them, which made them turn gray.

However, when Dip’s father got home with lots of worms for his family to eat, he couldn’t find any of them. When Dip and his mother got home, all gray, the father couldn’t recognize them, and so he took the worms and left their home.

The father had found a place where there was no shortage of food. The bird happily returned home to share the food with his family, but he couldn’t recognize them. However, Dip and his mother didn’t give up, they went to the pond nearby to wash themselves.

After washing themselves, they came back to the house, chirping their favorite song. This made their father recognize them immediately. He then apologized to Dip and his mother and welcomed them home. The older bird feeds his family with lots of worms.

After that day, Dip and his family were never hungry, and they didn’t have to rely on others for food anymore. This concludes the story of the hungry bird.
