Why The Dog Only Barks

The story of why the dog only barks starts with two animals: a tortoise and a dog. Both animals were very good friends, and they both had their farms where they grew crops. One of the friends was very hardworking, while the other friend was lazy.

Why The Dog Only Barks

The determined and hardworking dog, while his friend the tortoise preferred to spend his days lazing around. The dogs, along with other farmers, worked on their respective farms so that they could harvest later.

While the farmers would work on their farms, the lazy tortoise would not work on his farm. Instead, he would boast about how his harvest was going to be the biggest than the whole village.

The whole village would make fun of him and doubt his claim that he was going to have the biggest harvest in the whole festival. This is because no one had ever seen the tortoise work on his farm before. Still, the tortoise would brag that he would have the biggest harvest.

As it was time for harvest season, the king of the whole land sent a message through the local town crier. He told him to announce to the whole town when the next harvest festival was going to take place.

The king announced that the farmer with the biggest yam would win the harvest festival and receive a handsome prize. Alas, the day of the harvest festival.

When the day of the harvest festival arrived, everyone in the town harvested their yams, however, the only animal in the town who didn’t have any yam to harvest was the tortoise.

Having no yam to present during the harvest festival, the tortoise resorted to stealing a yam from someone else’s farm. Ironically, the tortoise decided to steal yam from the King’s relative.

The tortoise then went to meet his trusty friend, the dog, and gifted him with five tubers of yam. The tortoise bragged to him that the yams were from his farm and he told his friend to have a taste of it.

After this, the tortoise cunningly went to the King’s palace to inform him that he sighted his friend the dog stealing from the king’s relative farm. Following his complaint, the king sent his guards to arrest the dog.

The king presented the dog to him in the palace, and he awaited his punishment. The tortoise decided to visit his friend before the king could punish him. The tortoise deceived his friend that he was king for his release.

His friend deceived the king by getting him to agree to free him only if he barked in response to questioning. Hearing this question, the dog was in agreement with this.

The king’s day for the trial arrived, and they brought the dog before him. The dog refused to answer why it had stolen the yams, instead barking. The townsfolk were ordered by the king to imprison the dog and keep it there until its execution, following his anger over its misconduct.

The dog’s farm was taken over by the tortoise while he was held captive. Days passed and the tortoise was still in control of the dog’s farm. While drinking with his friends one faithful day, the tortoise, intoxicated by alcohol, expressed his wisdom.

The tortoise managed to outwit the king and the dog. Shortly after learning this information, the king took swift action.

He ordered the dog to be released with the tortoise kept captive. The dog has continued to bark because King never goes back on their statement.
